5-cent returnable bottles and cans only, exactly as labeled: the container itself must carry the NY 5-cent deposit marking. Bring them cleaned (empty and rinsed) and sorted: bottles separate from cans, aluminum cans separate from any steel, and glass separated by colour. Containers without the deposit label are not accepted as deposit returns.
Rules last confirmed 2026-10-07. Acceptance changes — always treat this as the current state, not a permanent list.

The curriculum · 13 lessons
A redemption center is the place deposit containers go back to. Instead of being sorted loose at the curb, each container is counted, its deposit is refunded to whoever brings it in, and the containers are baled by material and shipped to a reprocessor. The deposit is what pulls the container back: the money is already attached to it, so the container has a reason to come home.
- Containers are counted and the deposit refunded
- Material is separated before it leaves the building
- The deposit is a return incentive, not a recycling fee
